If you have read past posts you know I read "The Diary of Anne Frank"in Language Arts. In this book Anne Frank and her family as well as another family, are hiding in Amsterdam for two years before her father's coworker informs the Gestapo (German Police), on their whereabouts. The book ends with her last diary entry on August 1st, 1944 the last words in that entry were " ... and keep trying to find a way to become what I'd like to be and what I could be if... if only there were no other people in the world." (The Diary of Anne Frank, diary entry of August 1, 1944).
"So what?" you could be asking, "What's so important about this book... why is it so famous?". The book, as you may know is the actual diary of a young girl's time in hiding. Towards the end of her life, towards the end of the diary, she gets scared that someone tipped off the Gestapo of her location, scared that she is going to die in a concentration camp at the age of fifteen. This book shows life in hiding during the Holocaust, from the point of view of a teenage girl. We should value this book today, to remember what happened during the Holocaust. So we can remember what people went through to survive even if it is hard to accept the truth. The most valuable takeaway I learned from reading this book, is that you can still be happy if you are in a bad situation. Throughout her diary entries, she is positive even in misery. This book is one of the most read books in the world, people want to know what life in hiding was like, and what it was like as a Jew in the Holocaust.

Since I am reading "The Diary of Anne Frank", I decided to take a deeper look at some of the impacts from the Holocaust on Poland. In this book, Anne is in hiding with her family during the second world war. Concentration Camps, like Bergen-Belsen where Anne and her sister died, and Auschwitz where her mother and father were held (Anne and Margot were sent to Bergen-Belsen from Auschwitz).
Earlier in 2018, Poland established a law that is causing some conflicts on the topic of the Holocaust. Auschwitz was located in Poland. The Polish government claims, it will stop Poland from being insulted and blamed for the Holocaust. In my book Anne speaks of the Holocaust in one of her early entries in 1942 Anne speaks of the camp and tells stories of the camps Miep one of her protectors tells her, " Prominent citizens-innocent people-are thrown into prison to await their fate." (Friday October 9, 1942 diary entry). Poland does not want to take credit for the things that the Nazis did during World War Two. It relates to current day because camps were in Poland, Poland thinks they are being blamed for the Holocaust. When they really are not. I am reading The Diary of Anne Frank, It is the diary of a thirteen year old Jewish girl whose family had to go into hiding during the Holocaust. Her father (Otto Frank) published the diary and now people all over the world have the opportunity to see the life of a girl hiding from the Nazis. This was during the holocaust in Amsterdam where Anne and her family went into hiding in the upper levels of a warehouse. This book takes place during the second world war, and the Holocaust. It describes life in hiding over a two year span before (spoiler alert for those who haven't read the book yet) the gestapo found her family and were sent to a camp.
In the background of this book the holocaust is happening, news of someone else being taken away to a concentration camp, news of the Nazis invading another country these events were told to the Frank family connecting the story to World War two and the Holocaust. The Frank and Vann Dan ( other family hiding with them) looked at the situation they were in and hoped they would not get caught like the many Jews that did. Anne hoped the Nazis believed the letter her father sent claiming he was elsewhere worked. The Jews in the Country didn't want to go to concentration camps This book describes exactly what life in hiding was like as a teen during the Holocaust. For our research project, we will be focusing on homeless animals in the Wake County area. In 2016, 4,190 cats and 5,246 dogs were taken into shelters (2016 NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). All of these animals likely became homeless due to neglect or running away from abusive homes. This issue affects people in Wake County because when there are stray animals running around, there is a chance that those animals could cause harm to them because they aren’t accustomed to humans. These animals, dogs especially, could also potentially have rabies which can be deadly to humans (2018 Wildlife Education & Directory of Wildlife Experts). The current status of the number of animals that are homeless is hard to measure, but there are over 70 million cats alone in the US in need of a home. . In addition, only about 6.5 million animals are taken into shelters throughout the US (2018 ASPCA).
This issue is important to the three of us because we all have our own pets. If our pets were the ones that were on the streets barely surviving, we would immediately stop and get them help. Why is it any different from other dogs or cats? We need to help because if we have the opportunity to help our own pets, we should strive to help others who aren’t as fortunate to have a home. Seeing how happy and loved our own pets are, is incentive for us to want to be able to provide the same quality of care for animals who aren’t as fortunate as our own. What everyone can do takes little effort. The Issue In 2016 1,251 cats and 899 dogs were euthanized in Wake County (2016 NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). The Wake County Animal Center was at full capacity for cats and nearing the capacity for dogs in late July 2017 after over 150 animals were taken in that day (2017 Wake County Communications). Something similar to this occurred in early November 2017, there were 67 dogs and 60 cats available for adoption with 127 kennels in use at the time. Most stray animals go to the Wake County Animal Center so this shelter is almost always full (2017 Wake County Animal Center). If an animal is sick and the shelter is at capacity, some may have to be euthanized. This has been a problem since around 2016 when the numbers sparked to 2,683 cats and 2,368 taken into a shelter (2016 Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). Some of the causes of a large number of homeless animals include lack of responsibility, disposing pets, and abandoning pets (Humane Society of Central Illinois). This lead to almost full capacity in shelters and a large number of pets without homes. Some shelters like the Wake County Animal Center take in all stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals since they are operated by the county (2017 Wake County Animal Center). If this issue isn't taken care of soon, many animals will be euthanized and more shelters will be at full capacity. The Solution Other people are helping this issue by donating supplies that shelters need to take care of these animals. They donate newspapers, toys, old blankets, wet cat and dog food, and other things that shelters may need to provide adequate care to these animals. One of the many organizations that are doing a lot for homeless animals in the United States is the ASPCA. They are an organization that helps homeless animals get off the streets into shelters to eventually be adopted. Their mission statement is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”(2017 ASPCA). They have a shelter in Wake County that in 2016, helped 3,339 animals get adopted (2016 SPCA of Wake County). Even though many animals were helped, there is still much more to be done to help the millions of homeless animals in the US. Since the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, most of the dogs that once had places to live are now roaming the streets, homeless. Of the 100 animals brought over to the US, forty were taken into the SPCA of Wake County (2017 News & Observer). The most important part in helping these animals is what the people of North Carolina are doing. They are reporting any stray animals to shelters, volunteering at shelters, and donating what they can. Everyone pitching in what they can be a dramatic change in the statistics of homeless animals. The Conclusion A way we could help would be to do a drive to collect supplies that the SPCA of Wake County is in need of. We are not old enough to volunteer at any of the shelters in Wake County so organizing a drive for a shelter is the most simple way to do so. We will donate the items collected to the SPCA of Wake County. To spread the word we thought sending home letters with the students would be the easiest and quickest way. After the drive is over, we will deliver the collected supplies to the SPCA shelter in Raleigh. We contacted someone at the SPCA of Wake County, and they sent us a wishlist of items they are in need of at the shelter (2017 SPCA of Wake County). When it comes to transportation we will need a short bus, and at least ten volunteers, a teacher, and at least one chaperone to deliver the supplies to the SPCA. We would start the drive about two weeks prior to June 6th and have boxes around the school to put the donated items in, and to make posters and hang about five around the shelter. The time frame of these activities would start with collecting the supplies from around the school at around 8:00 am. Then we would pack up all the donations onto the bus by 9:30 am. When we get to the SPCA(the drive over is only about 20 minutes) we would drop off the donations, help out with what they would like us to do and head back to Martin. This project requires little effort from anyone. Our goal of this project is to help the animals that don’t have homes as much as we can. We want the animals in the shelters to be happy and healthy. In last July the Wake County Animal Center was filled to capacity. There was 71 dogs, 13 puppies, 32 cats, 40 kittens as well as 234 kittens in foster homes. Another problem similar to this one appeared in early November at this same shelter.
This relates to our community because so many animals don’t have homes in Wake County (where we are now). Many animals are too young to adopt and others are in foster care. I’m interested in this topic because I love animals and it’s sad to see such a large amount of animals without homes. I believe that all animals should have a home. People are affected by this issue because so many families are taking animals in as foster families. Animals are affected because they do not have proper homes. People should care about this issue because animals should have a home and a loving family just like humans. We could help this situation by going to a shelter like this one and playing with the animals or we could donate things such as dog beds, food, and toys for them. article link: http ://abc11.com/pets/wake-county-animal-center-full---animals-in-peril/2257691/ I have always loved to dance. Dance is how I learned to believe that you can succeed in just about anything if you set your mind to it and work hard. It began when I was in 2nd grade I went on a field trip to see the second act of The Nutcracker. I had never been to a ballet performance before I had no idea what to expect. As soon as the curtain went up and I saw Clara and I fell in love. I decided that I wanted to one day play the role of Clara in the Nutcracker. I asked my Mom if I could be a dancer. She signed me up a month later and I loved it. Every year I did the winter Nutcracker performance, I started out in battle scene and then moved to party scene and then the best friend. Seven years later I am still dancing. It’s my eighth grade year and I longed to be Clara. By this time some of my friends had played the role of Clara in the last few years and moved on to snow core. I knew it was my final chance, I had watched Clara’s part in full cast rehearsals and learned the role by heart. About two weeks after auditions, I got a phone call from my Mom. She had seen the casting and told me that I had gotten the role of Clara. I was super excited to start rehearsals. I woke up earlier than usual on Saturday because I had waited for this day ever since I first glanced at the cast list. As rehearsals began, I had got more excited to perform. Now with the performance right around the corner I cannot wait for this years performance and see what will come next year. Dance has taught me that I can succeed in just about anything and if I work hard and set my mind to it, my dream will come true. |
